Palma de Mallorca is not only the Capital for the Balearic Islands, but also the biggest city of the island in terms of both population and extension. Right now, the city is home to almost 400.000 people, and growing.
While 40 years ago there was nearly nothing, right now and due to the influence of the tourism it has become a multicultural and lively city, that people from all countries has chosen has their home. The climate, the many options in terms of finding a job and the Mallorca’s way of live of Mallorca makes its population grow every year.
The city is divided in to a many areas, but the most important ones for those visiting the island for the first time are:
The city has something to offer for almost everyone: good shopping, historical places and museums, nice restaurants and terraces, a lively nightlife and from cheap to design hotels. There is no way to be bored in Palma if you do not want to.
Please do not expect the Public Transport to be quite good, and expect it to be terrible in summer, when it will packed. It works from early in the morning until early night, but around 23:00 there will be no buses passing. Also, among the bus, there is no other option but taxis (which are not really expensive to be true). However, you can move around walking along the city as distances are not that long.
If you want to have a quick tour it is recommended to pick up the Palma City Sightseeing Bus (phone:: +34 902 10 10 81). The service starts at 10:00 in the morning and runs until 10:00 pm in summer and 18:00 during the winter. you can pick this bus at Plaza the España or any of the stops they have along the city:
Muelle Comercial – Plaza Juan Carlos I – La Rambla – Plaza de España – Av. Alejandro Roselló – Av. Gabriel Roca – Pueblo Español – Bellver’s Castle – Av. Joan Miro (Porto Pi) – Palma’s Harbour – Av. Gabriel Roca – Av. Jaime II
More information can be found at the Palma’s Council Website.
Shopping in Palma is not only fun, but cheaper than in the UK, which is one of the main attractions as you will get discounted rates.
Walk in o the city centre, and next to the Cathedral area you will find the Zara Shop, the H&M Store (those 2 at the Paseo del Born, next to McDonald’s) and El Corte Ingles store. There are many others not that big but also interesting such as the Camper Shoes Store, Yanko Shoes, Mango or Kidama. and this list is not limited, there many many more.
If you walk straight from Jaime II and down you will reach the Plaza Mayor (go upstairs the parking place) you can spot to San Miguel and Via Sindicato streets, where shops are more traditional and frequented by the locals, but also worth a visit.
If you’ll do, you are most probably to end up in the big El Corte Ingles, the one in the Avenidas. It is worth going inside and having look. but do not expect to be amazed of you will find there, is pretty much the same as another big store.
One thing you are supposed not to miss is Palma’s Cathedral: an perfect example of the latest catalan Gothic and situated just above the old city walls, above the Parque del Mar and in front of the sea.
Other places also to be found in the center are the Museo the Mallorca, which hosts works of successive Gothics paintings (Calle Portella), the Fundacion Joan March, a collection of works of different artists such as Picasso and Dali (San Miguel 11), the Palacio de la Almudaina, originally a citadel built by the Moorish governors and now home to the Capitania General (located just next to the Cathedral) or the Moorish baths, virtually the only remain from the Arab City of Medina Mayurca..
While eating out is just a matter of budget and tastes, there are a few places considered a must.
The first one is La Boveda Restaurant, in La Lonja, one of Palma’s most popular restaurants and the perfect place to try “tapas”.
Another good Spanish restaurant is La Cuchara(Paseo Mallorca 18, phone: 971 710 000), also serving tapas and Spanish dishes.
If you are looking for something more fancy then Koldo Royo will do the job. Koldo Royo is to Mallorca what Ferran Adria (El Bulli) is to Catalunya. Located in the seafront at the beginning of the Paseo Maritimo this one Michelin star restaurant serves both a la carte and a set menu consisting in 6 different dishes. One thing to note is that you maybe ready to be billed.
Finally, you can simply just let yourself go and discover places by your own: go to either La Lonja or Santa Catalina and choose the one that looks better to you.
Most of the bars and discos are to be found in the Paseo Maritimo, Palma’s most famous nightlife area. Not to miss: Tito’s, the disco with elevators outside their walls, where you enjoy the greatest viewings of the seafront promenade while you get in there, and Abraxas, before know as Pacha and located the end the way.
If you miss English people, then go to Molley Malone, next to the Capuccino’s bar, and enjoy meeting British and speaking English while having a beer. Just opposite you will the Hogans Bar, which will also do job if Molley is too crowdy.
Moving around Mallorca by bus is quite difficult, but possible. The bus central is located in the Plaza de España, as well as the train station does. Palma City buses are OK, but if you go the villages or small towns you will not find too much buses.
There is a train that goes to Soller (an old wooden train from the last century, much better for a day trip), but you will also find to trains going frequently (and much quickly) to some small towns).
As for renting a car, this can be done at many places and in almost all the resorts in the Island. Good rates can be found at Rent a Car Vanrell, which also serves at the Airport.
