For it's three star rating Astoria Playa is a nice hotel, with a fine kitchen, clean and tidy, on a central location (busy main road) and near the lovely beach of Alcudia.
The swimmingpool area is a bit small and can be crowded. We stayed there in June 2010 and had no problem finding sunbeds.
The restaurant closes at ten in the morning (that's quite normal) and at nine in the evening (that's quite early for Spain!!). These times are stated quite clear, so I don't understand the fuss POP from the UK is making. In the restaurant you sit at the same table every day. The prices in the bar are not too high.
The people are quite friendly in this part of Majorca. The hotel entertainment is not special but okay.
Very good value for money!

When we arrived at the Astoria Playa we were greeted by many cleaners polishing and dusting. This was positive as we were a bit worried. We made a very last minute booking as we wanted to go away.
Not quite up to the standards that we usually are used to but would recommend to anyone with a young family. No frills but clean, and beautiful beach nearby. Food not excellent but very good. Could always find a tasty meal in the buffet choices. Hotel pool very family friendly. And staff really helpful and friendly.

I stayed there for a week at the beginning of June with my wife and in-laws.
The first impression was disappointing but we thought that perhaps things would get better but they only got worse. The view from the balcony was of an Indian restaurant with strong whiffs of Indian cooking when we sat out in the balcony hoping to relax with a drink. The hotel staff constantly sorted the glass bottles out and threw them in bins for recycling creating a tremendous amount of unpleasant noise when we sat out in the balcony. The doors between the room and balcony were totally incapable of blocking the street noise which continued till after 2 AM.
The management would not change the rooms and exhibited a hotel policy of a charge of 30 Euros if anyone wanted to change their room for whatever reason. One could get sun beds only if they went to the pool area before 10 AM, the beds were in short supply.
The breakfast time was advertised as being up to 10 AM, implying that one could go for breakfast up to 10 AM. But one would be terribly mistaken if they thought that this was the case. At 10 AM you would be asked to leave the restaurant. So if you arrived in the restaurant just in the nick of time, you would literally have seconds to eat your breakfast. When I discussed this with the reception, the gentleman did not want to know about it. When I requested to see the manager, I was asked to come in the evening although I could see the manager sitting just behind the desk.
I spoke to restaurant staff who were very understanding and sympathetic but expressed their inability to do anything against the hotel policy. They took me to the office of the owner and by some miracle the manager also appeared when he saw me talking to the owner of the hotel. I thought, I was with the top person and will hopefully have solution to the problem. But NO ! I was astounded by what the owner and the manager had to say and could not believe my ears. They cut me short even before I could tell them my problem (I suspect that gentleman at the reception had already tipped them) and told me that in England most hotels stop serving breakfast by 9 AM so I should be lucky that Astoria Playa was serving breakfast till 10 AM.
No apologies were offered nor any gesture of some understanding of the point I was trying to make. I simply walked out of the office.
So my advice is - Don't go to Astoria Playa hotel in Majorca even if this was last hotel available. Save yourself from insult and agro.

Excellent hotel, could not fault it in any way.

I stayed at this hotel in July 07. I have to say i loved it.
The hotel is very clean and tidy. The food is excellent and they cater for all ages. From 1 to 101. They tend to concentrate on English and Germain food and do this to perfection.
The hotel is also situated in a great area, ideal for beach holidays and anybody who wishes to explore the restaurants and bars nearby. On the whole, this restaurant is well worth the money and i would advise it to anyone.

I thought it was very clean and tidy.
All the staff were friendly apart from the manager and the manager of the restaurant: they were very [removed].
Apart from that very good all round.

Stayed at this hotel 2nd July till the 12th July 2007.
This is a excellent hotel for all ages. We were on half board 6 of us ages 13 , 15 ,41, 45, 75 & 73. I don't know how they can justify this hotel only being 3 stars its more like 4 stars: food was excellent & plenty of choices. There are 2 lifts in this hotel and there was never much a queue to use the lift . Staff were extremely helpful all the time and the meals at night were waiter service for drinks: water was 2.20 euros & soft drinks 2.50 euros.
The only downfall for this hotel was the entertainment at night: it was OK but nothing special, but with the Astoria Playa hotel being in the centre of things you didn't have to walk far for great entertainment at one of the many bars.
Transfer time is approx 1 hour from Palma airport by private taxi.
I would definitely go back to this hotel, every one mixed.
What a great holiday my family had, just wished now I had booked for 14 nights instead of 10.

Fantastic family hotel.
The selection & quality of the food, the cleanliness of the rooms and the day and night entertainment was far higher than 3 star. We will definitely be going back .

Excellent for family or couples, staff so friendly, plenty to do outside hotel within easy reach of beech which I believe you would be hard pressed to find a better one in the med.
